Happy Thursday lovelies!.
Last night I was kindly invited along to review this classic musical and boy was I looking forward to it!. When I was younger my nana and Granda used to take me to the theatre all the time and this is a show that they took me to see. Seeing it at a young age and seeing it as an adult has given me two very different experiences with this fantastic musical.
About The King and I
This musical is set in 1860s Bangkok, where it tells a story of the unconventional and tempestuous relationship between the King of Siam and Anna Leonowens, who is a British schoolteacher who tries to teach the King new ways and beliefs of living that occur between men and woman. For example in one scene Anna asks for a pay rise as she believes all her hard work teaching not only all of the kings children but also his wives, deserves more than she is first offered, especially as she has a young child of her own to support. Not only does this musical tell the story of Anna and the King but it also shows a love story between Tuptim and Lun Tha.
I bloody loved it!. I appreciated it more as an adult than I did when I was a child. I fully understood what was going on unlike when I was younger. The play last for almost 3 hours but it’s so worth it, I mean just look how stunning that dress is!. I adored all of the outfits worn by Anna and the rest of the female cast. The choreography was spectacular especially during the part where they put on a play for Edward (who has came over from England). The music in it as well was amazing felt like I was at the opera the way they sang was just beautiful. I loved the storyline as it shows the difference between tradition and modernity. I loved the Royalty aspect of it as well, it was just a marvellous stage production from the props to the backdrops to the whole cast, I was well and truly blown away by this production. Even my mam shed a little tear at the end.
I would strongly recommend it to anyone, it’s by far one of my faves to ever see. Bartlett Sher who directed the King and I needs a medal, his work is amazing.
Have you seen this musical? What’s your fave musical to see?
